Practical questions for selecting label materials.

Direct thermal or thermal transfer?

Direct thermal media forms an image through heat-sensitive chemistry. Thermal transfer uses a ribbon to place the image on a compatible surface. Choose according to the printer, image life and exposure conditions.

Permanent or removable adhesive?

The required bond depends on the surface and use period. A removable grade must be tested after realistic dwell time to evaluate clean removal. A permanent grade also needs testing on the intended substrate.

Application temperature and service temperature

The temperature when the label is applied differs from the temperatures it encounters afterwards. Specify both, including condensation or frozen surfaces.

Prepare an effective enquiry

Include material preference, substrate, printer, dimensions, roll format, exposure, quantity and destination. This makes it easier to compare constructions on a common basis.
